- In the paper we have analysed results of micrometeorological observation in the surface layer in Gobi to the southwest of Linze town, Gansu province in September 1988. The results show in general the atmosphere is superadiabatic unstable state and there is a phenomenon of inverse humidity forming downward vapour transportation in cloudless daytime. It may be that there is no evaporation as a consequence of very dry ground surface in Gobi, hence the atmospheric humidity above surface layer is higher than that in surface layer unusually cause the vapour transportation from up to down. The sensible heat flux is dominant in the heat energy budget on ground surface and the latent heat can be neglected.

- A low cost, real time turbulence data acquisition system has been developed and successfully operated in the pilot experiment of HEIFE held in a Gobi desert station, August to September of 1988. A compatible set of computing programs has also been prepared and used in the processing of the data of over 150 runs, each lasted 30 to 45 mins. A preliminary analysis of the means, variances, and various turbulent fluxes calculated from the fluctuations of wind components, temperature and humidity, are presented. Most results are fairly good when compared with other resourses. The water vapor fluxes were apparently negative in daytime and positive at night. This feature is worth more careful investigation. Spectra characteristics of various parameters in near neutral stability are analysed. The vertical velocity spectral peak was found near f=0.4, which is higher than others; Its shape is also wider than normal reported.

- In this paper, the Coakley's spatial coherence method for obtaining cloud cover and determining clear sky radiances using high-resolution scanner data is recommended and applied extendedly to the inhomogeneous underlying surface. The characteristics of the clear sky radiance fields are investigated using high-resolution infrared and visible AVHRR LAC data for some representative regions, including the HEIFE experiment area--Zhangye, with different classifications of underlying surface in the west of China.

- AVHRR data for clear skies over the Heihe experimental area during the pilot experiment period in September, 1988 are used to investigate the effect of the satellite observing angles on the reflectance and vegetation index measurement. The anisotropic factors over land areas given by Taylor and Stowe (1984) are used for the correction. The study shows that the application of the anisotropic correction leads to quite good results, but some bias still exist for high albedo areas, such as Gobi-desert and for low albedo area such as mountain forest. Vegetation index is generally independent of the satellite observing angles, but for the same region, the vegetation indexes derived when the region is near the sub-satellite point are a little higher than those derived when the region is far from the sub-satellite point.

- Using a modified numerical model with higher resolution in both horizontal and vertical direction, the surface fluxes of the sensible and latent heat in the HEIFE region were diagnosed. Based on statistical analysis for the diagnostic fiuxes, the representativeness and setting for the location observational stations in the HEIFE region were investigated, a concrete scheme for setting up the observational stations in the HEIFE region with different underlying surface are obtained and the general principle of choosing the locations of observational staations with better erpresentativeness is proposed.

- In this paper, the climate characters of the temperature, humidity and wind fields on the planetary boundary layer (PBL) over the Heihe region and its neighbourhood have been analysed utilizing the multi-year monthly mean data at grided points and some sta tions of the area. The results indicate that the seasonal variations of the temperature and specific humidity on the PBL appear a waveform with basically equivalent value for the peak and valley; the lapse rates of the temperature and specific humidity on the PBL for each month are less and large than those on the free atmosphere, respectively. There is a northwest flow with quasi-nondivergence and weak rotation in the whole PBL. The seasonal variation of wind speed also appears a waveform with a equivalent value for the peak and valley in the surface layer, the wave amplitude increases rapidly with height, however, the phase is just contrary to the waveform of the temperature and specific humidity. The analyses of the monthly mean data at the Zhanye station for 07-and 19-hrs. (BLT) indicate that there is a pronounced climatically diurnal variation for the wind direction, wind speed and stratified stability. The monthly mean stratification only at 19(BLT) in July is true potential instability when the stratification of the temperature and humidity in the PBL was analysed at the same time, in the rest seasons and times are still stable stratification. The briefly analyses of monthly mean fields of the wind, temperature and specific humidity in the PBL of extension domain indicate that the surface layer of the Heihe region in the January, April, October is located at the shallow temperature trough area, however, the region in July is just located at the end of zonal temperature gradient vector; the specific humidity in July in the region is the a highest, the other months are very low; the streamlines on the surface layer in extension domain only in July are something complex, the surface layer over Heihe region is located a weak convergence flow field; the PBL over the Heihe region for rest months are basically controlled by the straight north west flow.

After being tested for maize farming land covered with plastic film over Heihe area in 1989, a mathematical model of multiple regression equation of water-saving and yield-increasing irrigating system has been obtained already. The regression equation relates the maize yields to four experiment variables: irrigating water amount, irrigating times, the number of leaves of the first irrigating, and the number of plants per mu.
Using the model the influences of various variables on the yield and the relative importance between various Variables are analysed, the effects of water-saving and temperature-increasing as well as yield-increasing with the plastic film covering and its mechanism have been also evaluated and approached in this paper.

- This paper describes an automatic observational network on the micrometeorological research utilizing computer and communication technology. The observing system has realized the automatic data collection, radiotransmission and real time processing in the experimental area. The whole observation network consists of one centre station and five observational substations. It provides a useful means about the atmosphere-land interaction processes experiments research.

- The data acquisition system is a sub-system in the automatic observing network system for field near surface meteorological observation. It includes data acquistions of both tower and radiation stations and data transmissions both from radiation to tower stations with wires and from the tower station to central station without wire. In this paper the hardware components and software programming of above two parts have been introduced. In addition, the principle of a special technique called eliminating noise method by measuring of simulation noise of a simulated environment has also been introduced, which has been used in researching and manufacturing the temperature sensors in the system.

- In September, 1988, a trial observation of the HEIFE was carried out at Huayin and Zhangye. Based on the collected observed data, the climatological characteristics of each component of solar radiation and spectral radiation over arid region have been analysed in this paper. The results are as follows: In that region during Autumn, the atmospheric transparency is higher; The solar resources is rich; And the energy ratio of blue-purple light in the total short-wave radiation was higher. The characteristic of surface net radiation is similar to that at plain region, which value is between that of Tibet Plateau and East Plain.

- Heihe experimental region is almost a closed water balance area. The inflow water includes river flow and groundwater runoff which are coming from out of the boundary of the region, and the total precipitation at the same area. The out flow water includes the river runoff and underflow at the Zheng Yi Xia hydrological station, and the total evapotranspiration from the experimental area. The variable of reservoir storage of ground water in the Oasis is without consideration, Because it is neglected. In this paper, the analysis of macroscopic water balance over the Oasis zone of Heihe experimental region in the 1987/1988 year has been made. The results show that: the annual water consumption over the Oasis zone in the year is about 585.3 mm; and over the irrigating and farm land area of the Oasis zone very like the ecology enviroment of annual rainfall of 625 mm over Beijing area. Thus we can say that the evapotranspiration amount of about 600 mm is the existence condition for a good Oasis. Here, the net water consumption is about 358.3m 3/mu in the irrigating and farming land area of the Oasis zone. Although, it is hardly to say that it is the best economic level of the water consumption in the Oasis, it is an important reference standard for the reasonable use of water at the irrigating area in the future.
- EFFECTS OF PLASTIC FILM COVERING ON BOTH YIELD-INCREASING AND WATER-SAVING IN IRRIGATED SPRING WHEAT FOR ALL GROWTH PERIOD

- In the past three years, a plastic film covering technique have been applied to irrigated spring wheat for its all growth period in 4 experiment points over west Gansu region. The intercomparisons of a series experiments with and without types show plastic film covering has certain effects on Yield-increasing and water-saving. The reasons for the effects are the following: The plastic film covering raises the soil temperature and moisture content, increases dry matter accumulation in wheat seed stage and its leaf area, improves its root growth, has more grains and 1000 grain weight. The plastic film covering also keeps the soil from drying, delaies the first irrigated time, decreases the times of water irrigation and water-cost in each irrigated time. In addition, the optimum combined regression model for water-saving, seed-saving and yield-increasing were also chosen by computer in past two year experiments.

- In this paper the related data of underlying surface at home and abroad and the common criterions of land use classifications were utilized, the actual conditions were also combined and the underlying surface feature, including land use, soil feature and terrain elevation, over Heihe River and it's neighbourhood have been classified into two kinds of grided data with high resolution (about 3 km×3 km and 6 km×6 km respectively). It is useful for the investigation of air-land interaction over Heihe River and its neighbourhood.
- ANNUAL AND INTERANNUAL VARIATIONS OF THE SENSIBLE HEAT FLUXES OVER THE HEXI REGION

- In this paper, the 10-year monthly mean surface sensible heat fluxes at 14 stations over Hexi and Tibet Plateau regions have been calculated based on the monthly mean data of the conventional surface observations during the period of 1971~1980, and their annual and spatial variation characteristics have also been analysed. It has been found that their annual variations are quite good agreement with that of surface net radiation, but there are some differences in Hexi and Plateau regions, even in west and east parts of Hexi area. In addition, the results of the power spectrum analyses of monthly mean surface sensible heat fluxes over Hexi region in winter show it is likely that there exists the periodicity about three years.
