Variations of Haze Days and Its Meteorological Causes in Nanning during 2000 to 2014

Abstract

Based on the meteorological observation data during 2000-2014, a new criteria is used to identify the haze days in Nanning. Variations of haze days and its meteorological cause are also discussed. Results show that:(1) The number of haze days in Nanning increased from 2000 to the highest in 2004, then decreased, reaching the minimum in 2011, but increased again in 2012 and 2013. (2) Monthly haze days in the dry season are more than that in the rainy season, and the haze days in July are the minimal, whereas haze days in December are nearly the most and the air pollution is almost the most serious in this month. (3) Haze frequency and PM2.5 concentration have significant diurnal variation characteristics, and the trends of them are similar. Because of relatively slow wind speed and hourly anallobaric, the atmospheric horizontal movement is weak and the sinking movement in upper air dominates in the morning, making the air pollutants difficult to spread. Thus the frequency of haze and the PM2.5 concentration at 08:00 are the highest over the day. Results of this study would be helpful to the forecasting and warning of haze pollution and can provide basis for agents in reducing the negative effect of haze.
